Meet the Port City Roller Girls!

The Port City Roller Girls brought the roller derby revival to Stockton more than a year ago. Today we remain the original, most experienced and most established league in San Joaquin County. We hope you can join us at the four home games we're holding from July to October at the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds.

If you've never seen live roller derby, or haven't seen it since it was last popular in the 1970s, prepare yourself for some intense, fast-paced sports entertainment as we take on other talented women's teams from Northern California and Nevada. We promise we'll jam our way into your hearts!

Inspired by similar organizations throughout the country, PCRG was born in the spring of 2006 and became the first all-female flat-track roller derby league representing Stockton and surrounding parts of the California Central Valley. We started training in August of 2006 under the leadership of an all-star coaching staff that includes former professional roller derby skaters and an award-winning artistic skater. In March of 2007, we hit the track for our first season, which continues with these four home games.

Roller derby is played by two teams on a flat circular track. Three blockers and one pivot from each team skate together in a pack, and one jammer from each team tries to get through this pack. The jammer scores points based on how many of the opposing team's players she passes. This is a full-contact sport, and most of the falls and hits occur when the jammer is making her way through the pack. But unlike the roller derby you may remember from the 1970s, the action and bruises are all real. Today's leagues help women build self-confidence on and off the track by providing an atmosphere of camaraderie and sportswomanship. We still like our skirts short, but not so short that we wouldn't want our daughters to wear them.

We are currently looking for volunteers to help with refereeing and working the bouts, as well as a few more good women, regardless of skating ability, to make the league even stronger. Skaters must be female and over the age of 18, but volunteers can be either male or female. Please contact us for practice times.
